Sandy returns to Top Tier Pro action in Europe
Lamborghini Factory Driver, Scot Sandy Mitchell, returns to top tier Pro action in Europe with Barwell and Dama Fortuna Tequila.
Lamborghini factory driver Sandy will contest the full 2025 GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS Sprint campaign in the ultra-competitive PRO category. The 24-year-old from Forfar will lead the team’s assault as Barwell Motorsport steps up to the championship’s PRO category for the first time.
Sandy, the 2020 British GT champion, will partner 20-year-old Englishman Hugo Cook in the No78 Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo2, prepared by Barwell and backed by Dama Fortuna Premium Tequila.
“I’m really looking forward to this season, and I’m excited to be a part of Barwell’s first entry into the PRO class of the GT World Challenge Europe,” Sandy stated. “I’ve competed in the PRO class before and know how much of a challenge awaits us, but I know that everyone in the Barwell team is fully prepared and committed to the exciting new challenge. It’s a big year for the whole team, but we have repeatedly shown we can go up against the best in the business and get results, so it’s really exciting for everyone.”
“Working with Hugo will be great. He’s a hungry young driver with so much potential and he’s keen to learn, plus he’s a great guy to have around. The fact we’ll both be racing in British GT with Barwell, albeit in different cars, is also a bonus as we essentially get double the mileage and can arrive at every European round fully up to speed and ready to go. I can’t wait to get started.”
Sandy, personally-backed by Tunnocks and who has twice been a class winner at the CrowdStrike 24 Hours of Spa, both with Barwell in 2019 and 2020, will go head-to-head with the world’s leading GT3 drivers in the five-round, 10-race series which comprises two one-hour sprints each at Brands Hatch, Zandvoort, Misano, Magny-Cours and Valencia.
In what will be Barwell Motorsport’s 10th season competing with Lamborghini Squadra Corse, team principal Mark Lemmer was quick to praise the Scot, who has been a mainstay of Barwell’s racing programmes over recent years and continues to go from strength to strength.
“Sandy is perhaps one of the most knowledgeable Huracan GT3 drivers out there having raced the car in every iteration in multiple championships … and he’s still only 24,” the team boss said. “Without the backing of Dama Fortuna Premium Tequila this programme wouldn’t be possible, so huge thanks to them for their amazing support.”
And Scot Euan Shand, founder of Dama Fortuna Premium Tequila, was quick to add his support for Sandy and the team’s first assault in the top tier of GT3 racing. “I have no doubt the team can thrive in the top class of GT World Challenge Europe,” Shand said. “It’s also fantastic to see Sandy as part of the programme. He’s got such a great history with the team and I think he and Hugo will form a formidable partnership this season.”
Sandy heads into the GT World Challenge Europe campaign backed by Tunnocks, Dama Fortuna, Alan Davie Ltd, Upper Dysart Larder, Results Gym, Electrical Switchgear Services and Scotphone ICS.
The GTWCE season gets underway at Brands Hatch on May 3/4.
