Sandy Mitchell returns to the British GT Championship
Lamborghini Factory Driver and former champ Sandy Mitchell, returns to British GT Championship for eighth successive year.
Lamborghini factory driver Sandy Mitchell has confirmed he will return to the British GT Championship this season. It will mark the 24-year-old from Forfar’s eighth successive year contesting the series. Sandy, the 2020 champion and who narrowly missed out on a second title last year by just five points despite winning more races with his team-mate Alex Martin than any other driver, will again partner the Englishman in the No 78 Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo2, prepared by Barwell Motorsport.
But changes outwith his control mean Sandy will be competing at just four of the seven race weekends, with Finnish driver and former Barwell team-mate Patrick Kujala stepping in for the remaining three. The Scot will partner Martin at the opening two-hour race at Donington on the first weekend in April, as well as the two one-hour races at both Oulton Park and Snetterton, before contesting the two-hour season finale back at Donington in October.
“I’m really happy to be back in British GT this year with Barwell and Alex,” stated Sandy who, for his dazzling performances in 2024 was awarded the coveted Allan Simonsen Award the British GT’s highest non-championship trophy and which tends to be considered the championship’s Driver of the Season for a second time.
“We enjoyed such an amazing season last year, and the aim is definitely to try and go one better this season and take the title. Alex enjoyed a real breakout season last year and I think he surprised a fair few people. Considering he’d not raced in the UK for a while and was new to the Lamborghini he marked himself out as one of the strongest Am drivers on the grid, capable of going toe-to-toe with anyone. “I have no doubt we can start this year as we finished last season and really push on for the championship for Lamborghini, Alex, and the guys at Barwell. It’s a shame not to be able to do the full schedule, but Patrick is a driver I know very well from our GT World Challenge programmes and he’s more than capable of stepping in and getting the job done.”
Martin too acknowledged the role Sandy, who is expected to add further campaigns to his 2025 season, played in his race development last year and admitted his regret that the Scot won’t be able to lift his second title this season. “It shouldn’t be an issue sharing the car with both Sandy and Patrick,” Martin explained. “Patrick’s a very capable driver who has great experience, and Sandy has been superb since we started working together. My one regret is Sandy won’t be able to win the title, but that won’t stop us from pushing as one to make it happen. I hope that if we can win it this year, both drivers can join me in collecting the trophy.”
Sandy, meanwhile, was eager to thank his sponsors for their “outstanding continued support” over the years. “My racing career couldn’t have progressed as it has without the continued support of Tunnocks, Dama Fortuna, Alan Davie Ltd, Upper Dysart Larder and Results Gym,” he said. “And for the 2025 season I’m delighted to welcome onboard Electrical Switchgear Services and Scotphone ICS as new partners.” Sandy and Martin begin their 2025 British GT Championship campaign at Donington Park on April 5-6.
