Lamborghini factory driver Sandy has won the coveted Allan Simonsen Award
Lamborghini factory driver, Scot Sandy, wins coveted Allan Simonsen award for second time, plus Sunoco fastest driver of 2024 at glittering award ceremony.
Sandy has won the coveted Allan Simonsen Award, the British GT’s highest non-championship trophy, for a second time. In doing so he becomes not only the second driver to receive it twice, but at 24-years-old, the youngest.
Sandy, from Forfar, received the trophy at a glittering award ceremony in Paris which celebrated all the SRO title winners from around the globe. The SRO Motorsport Group organises sportscar championships around the world including the British GT Championship.
Traditionally the Allan Simonsen Award is won by a driver with the same speed and spirit as epitomised by the late Dane who tragically lost his life at the Le Mans 24-Hours in 2013. The recipient also tends to be considered the British GT’s Driver of the Season.
“This award is a very special one to win, and I am honoured to receive it for a second time,” Sandy, who first won the award in 2020, coinciding with him winning the British GT Championship, said. “Allan’s reputation remains hugely well respected and acknowledged by everyone not just in British GT, but in sportscar racing around the world. To win the Allan Simonsen Award again, and be recognised by the judges at British GT for the performances I delivered in the 2024 season is truly humbling.”
Sandy, personally-backed by Huntly-based Black Bull Scotch Whisky and Tunnocks, only missed out on his second British GT title this season, driving his Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo2, prepared by Barwell Motorsport, by just five points. But throughout the season the Scot was the standout driver in the championship, winning more races than any rival and bagging four maximum point-finishes. In addition to his three race wins — at Oulton Park, Donington and Snetterton — he also bagged maximum points at the season finale at Brands Hatch. And in a dazzling season, Sandy’s one-lap pace was imperious setting new GT3 qualifying lap records at Silverstone and Brands Hatch, plus bagging pole position at Oulton, Donington and Snetterton. At the latter, he also posted the fastest lap in both races. No surprise then that Sandy also took the Sunoco Fastest Driver of the Year Award for 2024.
