Lamborghini Factory Driver Sandy Mitchell and team-mate Andrea Caldarelli bag another IMSA podium at Indianapolis to keep title charge alive with PFAFF Motorsports.

Lamborghini factory driver Sandy Mitchell and team-mate Andrea Caldarelli continued their impressive run of form when they bagged another GTD Pro podium in the latest round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

Mitchell, the 26-year-old from Forfar and fellow Lamborghini factory driver Caldarelli followed up their back-to-back wins in their No9 Lithia & Driveway Lamborghini Temerario GT3, prepared by top Canadian team Pfaff Motorsports, with a third place in the “Battle on the Bricks” at the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The result sees the duo head to the final round of the championship at Road Atlanta next month third in the title race, just six points off second place.

“It was another strong performance this weekend by everyone in the team,” Mitchell, personally backed by Tunnocks and Dama Fortuna Premium Tequila, said. “It was the first time we’d raced the all-new Temerario GT3 at the 2.4-mile, 14-turn road course and we definitely maximised the best performance we could achieve.”

With qualifying cancelled because of lightning in the area, Caldarelli started the race from third on the GTD Pro grid based on championship positions. By the first corner he had elevated the #9 Lamborghini to second place before a Full Course Yellow and subsequent Safety Car on the opening lap bunched the field up again. Forty-six minutes into the 160-minute race, the Italian pitted early from third to hand the car over to Mitchell. The Scot, who rejoined in seventh, immediately set about closing the gap to the cars ahead and by the time he pitted with just 63-minutes remaining he had elevated the Temerario GT3 back to third in class.

“It was a good, solid stint,” stated Mitchell, “and it was crucial we kept ourselves in the fight for at least a podium. The team made another aggressive strategic call, pitting me just as a Full Course Yellow period started. That meant when Andrea jumped back into the car he was fuelled to the end of the race while others probably had to pit again.”

And so it proved. Caldarelli sat ninth when the race went green again with 48-minutes remaining. With 18-minutes to go and up to seventh, two separate incidents involving four GTD Pro cars ahead catapulted the #9 Lamborghini to fourth. Then with two laps to go, the lead #59 McLaren was forced to pit for a splash of fuel promoting the Lamborghini to third at the chequered flag.

“We certainly benefitted by driving a fast, clean and smart race, staying out of trouble and maintaining the pace we’ve shown at the two race wins at Road America and Virginia,” Mitchell continued. “For everyone in the team, scoring another podium is testament to all the hard work that goes into a race weekend and the continued development of the new-for 2026 Temerario GT3. The result also keeps us well in the title race. We’re six-points off second, and 53-points off the leaders with 385-points available in the final race in Atlanta, which is a 10-hour endurance. We’ll enjoy this result, but then everything will quickly focus on Road Atlanta and the final race, Petit Le Mans. It’s going to be a thrilling end to the season.”

Mitchell returns to action for the season finale, the Motul Petit Le Mans at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta on October 1-3.
