Lamborghini Factory Driver Sandy Mitchell heads to Road Atlanta for IMSA season finale targeting GTD Pro title with PFAFF Motorsports

Lamborghini factory driver Sandy Mitchell heads to the season finale of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the Motul Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta this weekend, in a top-three shootout for the GTD Pro title. Mitchell, the 26-year-old from Forfar, will again partner fellow Lamborghini factory driver, Italian Andrea Caldarelli, in their No9 Lithia & Driveway Lamborghini Temerario GT3, prepared by top Canadian team Pfaff Motorsports. For the 10-hour race, they will be joined by a third Lamborghini works driver, Frenchman Franck Perera. With 385-points available over the weekend, and following their two race wins plus and a podium in the last three races, Mitchell and Caldarelli line up just six points off second place and 53 of the championship-leading car.

“We’ve done everything we can over the second half of the season to put ourselves in strong contention for the GTD Pro title,” stated Mitchell, personally backed by Tunnocks and Dama Fortuna Premium Tequila. “Everyone in the team knows it will take a huge effort this weekend, plus an element of good fortune, but we’ll be throwing all we have at qualifying and the race to give us the best chance.”

In what has been the first season for the all-new Temerario GT3, which made its faultless debut at the 12-Hours of Sebring in March before talking its first podium at Detroit in May, the Lamborghini has excelled in the second half of the calendar taking GTD Pro wins at Road America and Virginia International Raceway before sealing a podium last time out at Indianapolis.

“The rate of development on the Temerario GT3 this year by the crew at Pfaff Motorsports, plus the team at Lamborghini Squadra Corse, has been immense,” Mitchell continued. “To be entering the final race of the season with a chance of lifting the GTD Pro title against such established teams, cars and drivers is testament to all the work we’ve done behind the scenes.”

Mitchell and his team-mates know they line up on the 54-car grid for the gruelling 10-hour race on the high-speed, sweeping 2.54-mile, 12-turn road course in Braselton, Georgia, with one primary goal in mind. “Our focus is on winning the race,” the Scot said. “If we do that, and other results fall our way, we should be in a strong position to lift the title. All we can do is concentrate on what we can control. After that it’s in the lap of the Gods.”

In reality, and without factoring in qualifying where the polesitter gets 35-points, the #9 Lamborghini has to finish two, or more likely three spots ahead of the title-leading #4 Corvette to lift the title. “Anything can happen in a 10-hour race, but our strategy crew has been brilliant all year and I know they will give us the best opportunity to get the result we need,” Mitchell continued. “Everyone is fired-up for what should be a thrilling end to the year. Now all we need to do is get the right result.”

The action gets underway on Thursday with three Free Practice sessions ahead of qualifying on Friday. The 10-hour race gets underway on Saturday, October 3 at 12.10pm local (5.10pm UK). You can watch the race live on the official IMSA You Tube channel.
