Lamborghini Factory Driver Sandy Mitchell and Andrea Caldarelli seal second in IMSA GTD Pro title race with PFAFF Motorsports
Lamborghini factory driver Sandy Mitchell and team-mate Andrea Caldarelli finished the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship second overall in the GTD Pro class, and came tantalisingly close to lifting the title, missing out by just 0.266secs. It was a thrilling end to a season which marked the race debut of the new-for-2026 No9 Lamborghini Temerario GT3 prepared by top Canadian team Pfaff Motorsports.
Starting the season-finale, the Motul Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta, 53-points off the championship lead Mitchell, the 26-year-old from Forfar and fellow Lamborghini factory driver Caldarelli took the chequered flag fourth to eventually finish just 38-points adrift of the title. But in a cruel twist of fate and after 10-hours of fierce competition, the #9 Lamborghini crossed the line just 0.266secs behind the #1 championship-winning BMW. If the roles had been reversed, the title would have gone to the Lamborghini.
Mitchell and Caldarelli were joined by the third Lamborghini works driver, Frenchman Franck Perera for the 10-hour endurance race.
“We gave it our best shot and only narrowly missed out on the GTD Pro title by one position in the final race,” former British GT champ Mitchell stated. “And considering after the opening round we debuted the all-new Temerario for the rest of the season, it’s been a mighty impressive campaign. The car has been bulletproof ever since it took the track at Sebring in March and has never missed a beat. Everybody in the team and at Lamborghini Squadra Corse has worked tirelessly to develop the car throughout the year and to miss out on the championship by just a handful of points and one position on-track is testament to all that hard work.”
Worth highlighting that in the high-scoring IMSA points system, the winning duo scored 3017-points to Mitchell and Caldarelli’s 2979-points. The 20-point swing between third and fourth in the final race was crucial. The action-packed day-night race was punctuated by a downpour, a red flag for nearby lightning strikes, more than a dozen full course yellows and differing fuel and tyre strategies.
“It was a demanding race for a number of reasons and a tough one to call because of all the full course yellows and the red flag,” Mitchell, personally-backed by Tunnocks and Dama Fortuna Premium Tequila, continued. “It’s been great racing with Andrea and the crew at Pfaff Motorsports. Everyone associated with the No9 car can be immensely proud of what we’ve achieved this year with the new Temerario GT3. Two GTD Pro race wins at Road America and Virginia International Raceway, two additional podiums at Detroit and Indianapolis, plus second in the championship and all with a brand new car. A good year all-round really.”
