Lamborghini Factory Driver and former champ, Scot Sandy Mitchell, gets British GT Championship season underway this weekend with Barwell.
Sandy begins his 2025 British GT Championship campaign this weekend (April 5/6) with the season-opening two-hour race at Donington Park. The 25-year-old from Forfar will again partner team-mate Alex Martin in the No 78 Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo2, prepared by Barwell Motorsport, and the duo return to the Leicestershire circuit determined to repeat their win of 2024.
Sandy: “Alex and I won the three-hour race at Donington last year, and it would be a terrific way to start the season if we could win again,” stated Mitchell who, due to changes outwith his control, will contest just four of the seven British GT race weekends this year. We started from pole position in the race last May and we’re confident we have the pace to be out front again. Our pre-season testing has been excellent and everyone in the Barwell team heads to Donington knowing we not only have the pace for pole, but to win the race.”
Sandy, who won the title in 2020 and received the coveted Allan Simonsen Award — the British GT’s highest non-championship trophy and which tends to be considered the championship’s Driver of the Season — for a second time following his dazzling performances in 2024, is committed to doing everything he can to help team-mate Martin lift the 2025 British GT title.
Sandy: “We only narrowly missed out on the championship last year and though I can’t win it this season because of my restricted appearances, I’ll do everything I can to help Alex,” the Scot, personally-backed by Tunnocks, said. “Finnish driver and former Barwell team-mate Patrick Kujala will step in for me when I’m unavailable, and together hopefully we’ll push Alex to the title.”
Sandy’s 2025 campaign is boosted by the continued support of Tunnocks, Dama Fortuna, Alan Davie Ltd, Upper Dysart Larder and Results Gym. For the 2025 season new partners Electrical Switchgear Services and Scotphone ICS add further support.
The opening two-hour British GT race gets underway at 12.45pm on Sunday, April 6, following qualifying on Saturday. The full race will be broadcast on delay at 8.30pm on Sunday evening on Sky Sports F1 (Ch406 & 857).
