Storming podium drive in British GT Championship
Lamborghini Factory Driver and former champ, Scot Sandy, delivers a storming podium drive in the British GT Championship opener to finish second in a thrilling opening two-hour race in the British GT Championship at Donington Park.
Sandy, the 25-year-old from Forfar, partnered team-mate Alex Martin in the No 78 Lamborghini Huracan Evo2 GT3, prepared by Barwell Motorsport. Martin started the race from third on the grid and had muscled his way into second by the time the cars exited Turn 1 on the opening lap. Following an extended full course yellow and safety car period, Martin handed the Lamborghini to Sandy after 63 minutes with the gap to the lead No.42 Mercedes 5.6secs. And for whole of his stint, the Scot threw everything at the lead car in an effort to gain the win.
Sandy was immediately quick, posting the fastest lap of the race clocking 1min 25.577secs round the 2.48-mile Leicestershire circuit. Two laps later he went even quicker, lapping in 1:25.256s, cutting the gap to the #42 to just 3.7secs.
For the next 48-minutes, Sandy hounded the rear of the Mercedes. But a combination of his rival’s straight line grunt, battling the resultant aero turbulence flowing off the back of the lead car and not having the luck when the pair came across back markers, eventually saw Sandy finish just 1.1s away from the win.
Sandy: “That was a brilliant, but tough race,” Sandy, the 2020 champ and personally-backed by Tunnocks, said afterwards. “I threw everything at the Mercedes but just could never get close enough to make the overtake. It’s always been quick in a straight line, then when I got closer in the corners there was so much dirty air being thrown off the back of the car that it it impacted the handling of my Lamborghini. For the bulk of my stint I was hounding the Mercedes, between 1.5 and 1.0sec behind. I was pushing to make the overtake and hoping to pressurise him into a small mistake, but hat’s off to him. It was a super race and a lot of fun. It’s a great start to the season with second place and the fastest lap of the race. The car was perfect all weekend and the team did a terrific job at the pitstop, so it’s a really strong start to the year for everyone.”
Sandy’s 2025 campaign is boosted by the continued support of Tunnocks, Dama Fortuna, Alan Davie Ltd and Upper Dysart Larder. For the 2025 season new partners Electrical Switchgear Services and Scotphone ICS add further support.
