Sandy reunites with WTRAndretti to tackle IMSA Sprint at Road America
Lamborghini Factory Driver, Scot Sandy Mitchell, reunites with WTRAndretti to tackle IMSA Sprint at Road America.
Lamborghini factory driver and former British GT champ Sandy will return to racing in the States this weekend (Aug 3/4) when he tackles the latest sprint race in the northern leg of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship at Road America. The 24-year-old from Forfar will reunite with the Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti (WTRAndretti) team to drive the No. 45 DEX Imaging Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO2.
Sandy, fresh from three back-to-back podium finishes in the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe sprint and endurance races at Hockenheim and the Nurburgring, will substitute for the team’s full-season co-driver, Kyle Marcelli. Marcelli will miss the race at Road America due a minor arm injury. “I’m delighted to be back racing with the WTRAndretti team,” Sandy, personally-backed by Huntly-based Black Bull Scotch Whisky and Tunnocks, and who will partner Costa Rican race winner Danny Formal in the #45 car, stated.
It will be the Scot’s second outing in the 2024 IMSA series having contested the Rolex 24 at Daytona in January. And Sandy has strong memories of racing with the WTRAndretti team. Together they won three races in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Championship in 2019, including winning both events at Road America and setting a new lap record at the circuit, plus finishing Vice-Champion in the World Final at Jerez after finishing tied on points with the winner.

“I have amazing memories from racing with the team in the 2019 Super Trofeo championship and I look forward to working with everyone in the GTD program,” Sandy, who also tested with the team in California earlier this year, continued. “I really enjoyed the test at Laguna Seca earlier this year which gave me a good feel for the race car and I feel it will help going into this weekend. Danny is a super-fast team-mate, and we will both be pushing for a top result at Road America. I know the track from my time in Super Trofeo and it’s one I really enjoyed so I’m excited to head back there in GTD (GT Daytona).”
And WTRAndretti team principal, Wayne Taylor, is looking forward to having Sandy in the car for the weekend. “Obviously this weekend will be a little different without Kyle Marcelli in the GTD car,” Taylor said. “We look at every aspect of the GTD program and this was a case of putting Sandy in the car and see how we run while Kyle recovers. The Lamborghini has shown speed at previous events and I have good feelings about this weekend and what our team can achieve.”
Sandy will get his first experience of the WTRAndretti race car at Road America on Friday ahead of Saturday’s qualifying. The 2hr 40min sprint race at the demanding 4.048-mile road course gets the green light on Sunday.
