Lamborghini Factory Driver, Scot, Sandy, on the pace with WTRAndretti IN IMSA Sprint at Road America.
Former British GT champ Sandy, saw his hopes of a GTD podium finish in the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship sprint race at Road America in Wisconsin dashed by a rare mechanical issue. Partnering Danny Formal in their Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti (WTRAndretti) No.45 DEX Imaging Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo2, the 24-year-old from Forfar looked on as his Costa Rican team-mate was forced to stop the car just 20 minutes into the two-hour 40-minute race.
“We had qualified sixth on the grid and Danny had already moved us up to fifth before he had to park the car because of the rare mechanical issue,” Sandy, personally-backed by Huntly-based Black Bull Scotch Whisky and Tunnocks, explained. After the car was towed back to the team’s garage, the crew carried out speedy repairs and Formal was able to rejoin the race with just one hour and 20 minutes to go. Sandy took over with around 30-minutes of the race remaining and both drivers delivered excellent race pace matching those of the GTD leaders.
“It’s been great coming back to race with Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti,” continued Sandy who, as a result of the time lost early in the race, took the chequered flag in 15th place at the 4.048-mile road course near Elkhart Lake. “Our car unfortunately had a bit of bad luck in the race with a mechanical issue. It doesn’t happen very often in these cars, so it was just a shame with the timing of that. It’s been great working with Danny and the team. I think we arrived at the race with a pretty strong package and were fighting in the top five before we had the issue. Before the problem I believe we definitely had the chance of a podium finish, and that was confirmed by the strong pace we showed at the end of the race. Hopefully the guys can take that momentum into the next race and get themselves onto the podium where they deserve to be.”
