Sandy returns to the Euro GT3 Pro Cup at Misano
Lamborghini Factory Driver, Scot Sandy Mitchell, returns to to Euro GT3 Pro Cup at Misano with Barwell and Dama Fortuna Tequila.
Sandy returns to GT World Challenge Europe Sprint Pro Cup action this weekend (July 19/20) when he heads to Italy and the demanding circuit at Misano. The 25-year-old from Forfar will again partner team-mate Hugo Cook in the No78 Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo2, prepared by Barwell and backed by Dama Fortuna Premium Tequila. And Mitchell is only too aware how important qualifying will be for both one-hour races at the 2.6-mile, 16-turn circuit on Italy’s Adriatic Coast, with 44-cars lining up on the grid.
Sandy: “Qualifying is always important, but it’s definitely more significant at Misano where, traditionally, it’s difficult to overtake,” the Scot, personally-backed by Tunnocks, explained. “With 44 cars on the grid you definitely need to be starting at the sharp end.”
Sandy heads to Italy fresh from bagging two podium finishes in the latest British GT Championship double-header at Snetterton, where Cook also finished in the top three driving the sister Barwell Lamborghini. “We both arrive in Italy on good form having been pushing for the win at Snetterton,” former British GT champ Mitchell continued, “but GT World Challenge Pro is big step up. We had a really strong start to the season at Brands Hatch, so we’ll be looking to repeat that form.”
For Sandy it’s a return to Misano having competed there 12 months ago in the Bronze Cup, and the Scot is excited to be back racing in Italy with Lamborghini. “Last year’s experience was good and it’s terrific to return again but in the incredibly competitive Pro class,” he said. “It’s quite an interesting track, with a lot of kerb usage and a fast final sector. There’s a big mix of very slow speed corners and a couple of high-speed corners. It tests everything about the car and the driver, and with Misano being Lamborghini territory there’s an added incentive. I’m looking forward to getting stuck into the Pro field in GTWCE. Hopefully we can bag another couple of good results.”
The action gets underway on Friday with Free Practice and Pre-Qualifying, before official Qualifying takes place at noon (local) on Saturday. The first 60-minute race takes place on Saturday evening at 8.15pm. Sunday’s action sees another Qualifying session at 10.25am followed by the second one-hour race at 2.45pm. (All times are one hour ahead of UK.)
