Euro GT3 Pro Sprint Series: Zandvoort

Lamborghini Factory Driver Sandy, targeting Dutch delight with Barwell as Euro GT3 Pro Sprint Series heads to Zandvoort.

Sandy is targeting a Dutch delight this weekend (May 16-18) when he tackles the latest double-header in the GT World Challenge Europe Sprint Cup at Zandvoort. The 25-year-old from Forfar will again partner team-mate Hugo Cook in the No78 Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo2, prepared by Barwell and backed by Dama Fortuna Premium Tequila. And Sandy heads to the demanding Dutch circuit for the first time fuelled by the pace the #78 car showed last time out at Brands Hatch.

Sandy: “We showed in the opening two races that the Lamborghini has fantastic pace, and given it was the team’s first time contesting the ultra-competitive GT3 Pro class it was only a split second of bad luck that cost us a good run at a podium finish,” the Scot explained. “It was also Hugo’s first time competing at this level and he immediately showed he has the ability to mix it with the best drivers, so we’re all ready to take it to the next level this weekend.”

This will be Sandy’s first time racing at the demanding 2.67-mile, 14-turn circuit — which hosts the F1 Dutch Grand Prix — complete with its iconic 18-degree banking at both the Arie Luyendijkbocht and Hugenholtzbocht corners. And he’s looking forward to the challenge of the circuit which perches on the Dutch coastline next to the North Sea.

Sandy: “There’s no other circuit quite like it in GT3 racing,” the 2020 British GT champ personally-backed by Tunnocks, continued. “Hugenholtzbocht at Turn 3 is a daunting left-hander which offers a number of different racing lines. And the final corner at Arie Luyendijkbocht is a high-banked right-hand corner which is crucial to get correct as it sends you down the long start-finish straight. I’ve spent a long time driving the circuit on the sim, but I can’t wait to experience it in the real. The circuit will be challenging for all the drivers, and remember we have a 41-car grid this weekend. There are overtaking opportunities on the circuit, but again qualifying well will be crucial.”

In what is one of the world’s most competitive GT3 series, Free Practice and Pre-Qualifying sessions take place on Friday (May 16), before Saturday morning’s qualifying ahead of the first one-hour race which starts at 2.45pm local (1.45pm UK). The format is repeated on Sunday, with a second qualifying session in the morning before the final 60-minute race, again at 2.45pm local.
