Euro GT3: Barcelona

October 10, 2024

Lamborghini Factory Driver, Scot Sandy Mitchell, targets first Euro GT3 title at Barcelona with Collard and Barwell.

Sandy, bids to clinch the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Sprint Bronze Cup this weekend (Oct 12/13) when he tackles the final round at Barcelona. The 24-year-old from Forfar will again partner team-mate Rob Collard in their No78 Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo 2, prepared by Barwell Motorsport and backed by Dama Fortuna Tequila, on the 32-car grid for the two one-hour races. And the duo, who finished first and second in this year’s British GT Championship, having previously won it together in 2020, head to Spain fresh from winning last time out in Europe at Magny-Cours in France.

“We won the opening sprint race at Magny-Cours, then finished P3 on-track in the second,” Sandy, personally-backed by Huntly-based Black Bull Scotch Whisky and Tunnocks, said. “Unfortunately the stewards adjudged Rob had overtaken under yellow flags in a chaotic start, something the team appealed, but the decision ultimately dropped us to seventh. Despite that we’re currently second in the Bronze Cup standings, just 9.5-points behind the leaders, and with 33-points available this weekend we’re right in the battle.”

“Qualifying, as always, will be crucial because overtaking at Barcelona is notoriously difficult, but we both know we have a super-fast car. That, allied to the strength of the whole Barwell team puts us in a strong position to push for the wins.”

And with Barwell already having sealed a 1-2 in the British GT Drivers’ Championship, alongside dominating the GT3 Teams’ Championship, Sandy is determined to bag another title for the partnership. “All three units – Barwell, Rob and myself — have been incredibly strong this year,” he continued, “and it would be a fantastic way to end the European Sprint Bronze Cup campaign by winning races and lifting another title.”
