Six Hours of the Glen
Lamborghini Factory Driver Sandy Mitchell fired-up for six hours of the Glen as he heads to upstate New York for latest IMSA round with PFAFF Motorsports.
Lamborghini factory driver Sandy Mitchell returns to action in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship this weekend when he travels to Upstate New York for the six-hour race at Watkins Glen. Fresh from delivering his first IMSA podium finish last time out in Detroit, the 26-year-old from Forfar will again partner fellow factory driver, Italian Andrea Caldarelli in the No9 Xpel Temerario GT3 prepared by top Canadian team, Pfaff Motorsports, in the GTD Pro class. And the Lamborghini will sport a stunning new yellow livery for the race. A total of 54 cars are scheduled to line up on the grid. For Mitchell, the race marks a return to the 3.37-mile high-speed circuit — which previously hosted the US F1 Grand Prix — less than a year after he made his first outing with Pfaff at the track. And it’s a circuit where the Scot has previously impressed.
“Last year we started the six-hour race from pole position after a great qualifying, and having been fastest in both opening free practice sessions,” Mitchell, personally-backed by Tunnocks and Dama Fortuna Premium Tequila, explained. “But unfortunately, despite leading the race we were forced to retire when the Huracan suffered a rare electrical gremlin. “This year we head into the race full of confidence after the opening three races with the all-new Lamborghini Temerario GT3. It was fantastic for everyone in the team to score our first podium with the car last time out, and we’re all looking to build on that success this weekend.”
Mitchell, personally, also has a successful track record at Watkins Glen. Seven years ago, as a 19-year-old he bagged two podium finishes in Lamborghini’s Super Trofeo North America series at the circuit. Now he returns to fight for victory in the Blue Riband GTD Pro class.
“Watkins Glen is a track I really enjoyed when racing in the US in the Super Trofeo North America, and we proved again last year that the Lamborghini, and the team, have the pace to be battling at the front of the field,” Mitchell continued. “I know the team has been working extremely hard since Detroit to extract even more performance from the Temerario, so I’m looking forward to tackling the race again with Andrea.”
The action gets underway with a Free Practice session on Friday, ahead of Free Practice Two on Saturday followed by qualifying. The six-hour race starts at 12.10pm local, (5.10pm UK) on Sunday, June 28. You can watch the race live on the official IMSA You Tube channel.
