Sandy Mitchell targets back-to-back GTD Pro wins with PFAFF Motorsports as IMSA heads to Virginia.

Lamborghini factory driver Sandy Mitchell returns to IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GTD Pro action this weekend when he heads to the Virginia International Raceway for the latest 160-minute race. Mitchell, fresh from taking his first IMSA win last time out in the six-hour race at Road America, will again share the No9 Lithia & Driveway Temerario GT3, prepared by Canadian team Pfaff Motorsports, with fellow Lamborghini works driver Andrea Caldarelli. And for Mitchell, the 26-year-old from Forfar, this weekend’s race sees him return to a circuit where he set a new lap record on his first time out in the 2019 Super Trofeo North American Championship.

“That was my first time racing on the circuit in a Lamborghini,” the Scot, personally backed by Tunnocks and Dama Fortuna Premium Tequila, explained, “and the circuit certainly suited me and the car. Over the two 60-minute races I set fastest lap of the race, a new lap record and finished on the podium, so it wasn’t a bad outing.”

While the Grand Touring Prototype (GTP) and Le Mans Prototype 2 (LMP2) cars in the IMSA field take their summer break, the 17-corner 3.27-mile VIR circuit — acknowledged as being one of the toughest and most technical tracks in America — is handed over solely to the GTD Pro and GTD cars, with a grid of 23 starters. And Mitchell knows grabbing back-to-back IMSA victories would be very special.
“Winning at Road America, sealing the first global endurance race win for the new-for-2026 Lamborghini Temerario GT3 was special for everyone involved with the team,” he continued. “Right through the race we showed we had pace to match the title contenders, and in a number of cases we were even faster.

“The win was testament to all the hard work put in by everyone behind the scenes at Pfaff, and winning again would be a real statement.
“Plus, with the GTP and LMP2 cars not racing this weekend, it’s a chance to win the race outright, which would mean we’d be parking in Victory Lane and get the confetti and stuff like that. We know it’s going to be another very tough race, but everyone at Pfaff is up for the fight.”

The action gets underway on Friday, August 21, with the opening 90-minute Free Practice session, followed by FP2 and qualifying on Saturday. The race starts at 12.10pm local time (5.10pm UK) on Sunday, August 23. You can watch the race live on the official IMSA You Tube channel..
