Lamborghini Factory Driver Sandy Mitchell heads to Road America for Six-Hour IMSA GTD Pro Race with PFAFF Motorsports
Sandy returns to IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship action this weekend when he tackles the six-hour Motul SportsCar Endurance Grand Prix in Wisconsin.
The 26-year-old from Forfar will again partner fellow Lamborghini works driver, Italian Andrea Caldarelli in the No9 Motul Temerario GT3 prepared by Canadian team Pfaff Motorsports. A total of 54 cars will line up on the grid at the iconic 4.048-mile, 14-turn Road America circuit at Elkhart Lake. For Mitchell, it’s a return to the demanding road track where, in 2019 he set a new lap record on his way to winning both races in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Championship double-header.
“I have amazing memories from racing at the circuit in 2019 during the Super Trofeo championship,” Mitchell, who also contested a sprint race at Road America in 2024, explained. “It’s a track I really enjoy so I’m excited to head back there in GTD Pro with Andrea and the Pfaff crew.”
It will be the first time the all-new Lamborghini Temerario GT3, which will carry a new Motul-based livery this weekend, will have raced at Road America and Mitchell is confident the tireless work going on behind the scenes to deliver more pace will deliver a positive result this weekend.
“As I’ve said before, every circuit we’re racing at this year means we’re essentially arriving with a clean sheet of paper given we have a brand new car this season,” the Scot, personally backed by Tunnocks and Dama Fortuna Premium Tequila, continued. Reliability wise the car has been bulletproof, but the competition at GTD Pro level is so intense that every tenth-of-a-second we can extract in additional pace is crucial. I know that’s what the guys have been working on since our last race in Toronto.”
Mitchell is also looking forward to returning to the longer format racing and is confident it’s an opportunity to deliver a strong result. “I’m looking forward to another six-hour race,” he stated, “as it allows the team to be aggressive with their strategy calls during the race. We have a huge amount of experience on the pit wall and we head into the race targeting our second podium finish of the year.”
The action gets underway with the opening Free Practice session on Friday ahead of Saturday’s second 1hr 45min practice session and qualifying. The six-hour race then starts at 10.40am local (4.40pm UK) on Sunday, August 2. You can watch the race live on the official IMSA You Tube channel.
