Double European Championship assault

February 26, 2024

Lamborghini Factory Driver Scot Sandy, confirms double European Championship assault with Barwell and targets Le Mans 24H grid slot.

Former British GT champion, Sandy , will launch a double-pronged attack on Europe this season, which ultimately could lead to a grid slot in the iconic Le Mans 24-Hours. Sandy, the 23-year-old from Forfar, will tackle both the Sprint and Endurance series in this year’s Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe. Competing in the Bronze Cup category in both championships, the winner will gain entry to the world famous Le Mans 24-Hours in 2025. He will pilot the No78 Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo 2 prepared by Barwell Motorsport, the same combination which will fuel the his bid to win a second British GT title this season.

“There’s no denying it’s going to be a full-on season this year,” Sandy, personally-backed by Huntly-based Black Bull Scotch Whisky and Tunnocks, said. “I’ve had previous seasons when I’ve tackled both the British and European Endurance championships, but this will be the first time I’ve also included the Sprint championship.”

Sandy will share the #78 Lamborghini with two new faces, and one old friend. In the European Endurance Championship, American-based Englishman Till Bechtolsheimer and Frenchman Antoine Doquin will partner. In the Sprint Championship, Sandy will be reunited with former BTCC veteran Rob Collard. The duo won the 2020 British GT Championship together.

“It’s amazing to be back with Rob,” Sandy, whose Lamborghini will be backed by Dama Fortuna Tequila, a new tequila brand being launched in 2024, stated. “Rob’s a superb driver, and we’ve already achieved a lot together. Hopefully that can continue this season.
“I’m also looking forward to tackling the longer endurance races with Till and Antoine. We’ve already tested together at Silverstone, and both guys have extensive experience of competing, winning and grabbing podium places behind the wheel of a GT3 car, so I’m looking forward to the season. It’s also great to have an iconic Scottish brand like Tunnocks onboard for the European races, and their logo compliments the amazing Dama Fortuna Tequila livery so well. I can’t wait to get started. Racing in all three series with Barwell will be a great thing as having a consistent team around you, event after event, will definitely help us push the car forward throughout the season.”

The Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Sprint Championship visits Misano in Italy, Hockenhein in Germany, Magny Cours in France and Barcelona in Spain, with two one-hour races at each venue.

The European Endurance Championship, which opens with the six-hour race at Paul Ricard in Southern France ahead of the gruelling Spa24Hrs at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium, also visits the Nurburgring in German and Monza in Italy before the season finale in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Sandy’s European race season kicks-off at Paul Ricard on April 6/7, before the opening Bronze Cup Sprint race at Misano on May 17/19. But before that, the Scot will launch his assault on the British GT Championship at Oulton Park on April 1.
